LB@-BBC- The Yard.

Posted by Jeni in Ad Infinitum | 7 December 2010

OK it's bedtime but I was berated by my Beau Brummie for not bloggin'.

So here goes.

Back on March 1st my agent introduced me to a young geezer called Barry. He had been a runner on TVam when he was a nipper and I wasn't. We met in Covent garden, the daughter and 'oosbind arrived and before you could say 'Where have you been all my life.' we left Barry so we could celebrate B's birthday at Joe Allens.

Fast forward to April, May, June and July, and B's back was breaking down, Jim's back was breaking down, I was breaking down.

Then on September 17th, when I left LBC, I went into a nosedive.

Barry hoiked me up by my chins.

'Listen Lady' he said in a perfect Brummie accent 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.' he didn't actually say that but that was the gist of it.

So from a little téte-a-téte in Covent Garden, to phone calls, meals, theatre visits, readings of each others things- my agent had done her job royally - this little lad from the Midlands stole my heart and all my ideas.

He took them, shaped them, made them real and now, with his extraordinary vision and guidance, generosity and talent, we are inventing - together - what Barry likes to call MY NETWORK.

For the life of me I don't understand portals, websites, hubs or nexuses, all I know is that after filming for a whole day, writing links, interviewing guests, something is shaping up.

'THE KNACKERS YARD' is a concept, it may well be called 'LIFE BEGINS@', it may get dubbed THE YARD. But it will be our place of worship. You will be part of it. You will hear us on the radio, watch us on the telly, socially interact with us, you will marvel at Barry's brainchild and, hopefully, laugh at my jokes and cry at our SURVIVAL slot.

You will watch interviews with writers, doctors, healers and actors. You will listen to me on the radio - through the portals I'm told - you will help launch 'LB@' in THE KNACKERS YARD, you will be part of the 500,000 loyal listeners that made my day in Leicester Square, and all my loyal telly folk from GFL and beyond.

The radio bit will demand your calls.

The telly bit will demand your attention, we will have everything from art appreciation to live music.

It is my way of gathering up my energy and putting it back where it belongs. I have found my match, I thought I was a workaholic but the geezer from the Second City is up before me, goes to bed after me and still finds time to edit the days filming and then drink 47 pints of lager.

I have been made a member of the PHOENIX CLUB on Charing Cross Road, a basement dive that has more life in it than a resuscitation unit in Basildon. The Phoenix is where we filmed our first BBC bit. Barnetts Broadcasting Company, or Barnetts Best Conversation, or Bloody Brilliant Creativity in progress.

I work in Barry's office in Farringdon and squeak with excitement as I walk through Dickens Land. From the Betsy Trotwood Pub past eateries, drinkeries and wineries to the home of the EuroStar. I am actually working in the same office my mother worked in during the war. 'Synergy', as the Birmingham boy would say.

Barry said it was time we teased our project. So keep your eyes peeled, your ears pinned back, your nose to the grindstone and your shoulder to the wheel because before the clichés run out I will be back with you, four stone lighter but just as heavy.

If Barry weren't in a deliciously healthy relationship, and the old git weren't superglued to my heart, I would leave the 'oosbind immediately. But since he's got a brand new job in a brand new play in a brand new Arcola Theatre, I'm not going nowhere.

Tomorrow I have a funeral to go to. Always a gentle reminder that none of us get out of this alive. We are all heading for THE KNACKERS YARD, but with any luck, if Barry has got anything to do with it, it'll be a scream.

Hi Jeni,
sounds great - good luck with it all.
I like the idea of Life begins@...very original. And you're a wonderful role model for that - every day is a new beginning. Can't wait for you to start.
All the best, my dear!!

Barry is a peach. Delighted you've hooked up with him. The Pheonix is a fave bolt-hole and chuckle centre after a busy studio day. Jeni let's have that fizzing personality back on air, on screen and on top form in regular bright Barnett doses.
