Wot me an inverted snob?

Overheard at the carol concert last night in St. Pauls Church, Knightsbridge.

'Have you thought of 'Wellington' for Harry?'

'My grandfather was the maths master there so....'

'Oh! Harry will love it.'

I have never seen so many well heeled people in my life. The women were old but looked young. The men were young but looked old. The accents were so cut glass you could hear them tinkling in the wind. The mince pies, canapes and sparkling wine were worthy of the £35 tickets. Edward Fox, Shiela Reid, Lady Thingy and 'Holby City' starlet, not to mention Dominic West from the 'Wire' read the readings. Shiela got a round which was a little embarrassing since no others did. There was a rippling of applause for Dominic but only to cover the fact that Shiela had been given one in a church of all places.

The choir was lovely, only one or two of the women had that smug look that Oxbridge educated women get when they throw their heads back, bare their teeth like a mare and pretend to laugh but are actually snorting down their noses at you. One did that to me in the lavatory in The Vestry -

We all had skinny white candles with a circular cardboard shield to protect our hands from the wax. So we sung carols by candlelight. Mine went out after 'Silent Night'. but the old gits candle hung on until the last rousing chorus of 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' when it looked dangerously like setting the cardboard alight so Jim snuffed it - not literally.

It took ages to get out as everybody was shaking hands with the Vicar/Bishop/Bloke in the dress.

It's a beautiful church with Stations of the Cross whilst the very Reverend boasted a wonderful organ.

Who says the class war has died....

Hi Jeni

You do make me laugh. I feel exactly the same when I go to Borough Market. A market for the working classes originally, but no longer. There are more plums in the mouths than there are on the stalls!

I hope Christmas in your beloved cottage surrounded by your family and "things" soothes your frazzled mind.

Love June
